Kenneth S. Pitzer [1], associated with the University of California, Berkeley [3], is a central figure in shaping surface thermodynamics during this era. His 1940 work The Vibration Frequencies and Thermodynamic Functions of Long Chain Hydrocarbons [5] advanced the quantitative linkage between molecular vibrations and thermodynamic properties, enabling predictive insights into phase behavior relevant to catalysis and separations of the period. Terrell L.
